Historians of the old civilisations have given little attention on the prehistoric context of cultures which they study, and as a consequence much wild theories arise that says to be able to explain the origin of civilisation.
The most famous of such theories is undoubtedly of Erich von Dänikens ‘Chariots or the god?’ (1970), in which the writer states that the sudden rise of civilisation is due to the influence of aliens (space beings). Other writers, like von Däniken and a lot of imitators, believe that ' primitive ' cultures from the stone age could never develop to civilisations, and search the answer in theories concerning sunk continents. The myth of Atlantis is of course the most popular, but there are several other countries in mysterious pseudo-geography of these theories, such as Lemuria and Mu.
The pattern of these theories of extraterrestrial and that of lost continents are basically the same: lost or hidden civilisations - whether they are extraterrestrial or Atlantic - existed before those of Egypt and Mesopotamia and taught these two everything what they knew.
The ' evidence ' for such prehistoric civilisations is not provided of course by the physical rests of aliens or archaeological vestiges of Atlantis, they both don’t exist of course. It is suggested that the astronomic knowledge and the advanced technology of the old world could not be passed through by the cultures from the stone age and for this reason only explained by using Atlantis or aliens. Such points of view are terribly popular and influential and this is partly to blame to the standard vision of science which cannot explain in a convincing manner the origin of civilisation.
Nevertheless it is obvious that cultural elements of the Ancient Egypt and Sumer already existed in the stone age and these civilisations had their predecessors.
